DRAGON SONG SLAYS THEM AGAIN

DRAGON SONG extended her purple patch of form with a second straight win at Warwick. The mare is currently riding the crest of a wave and has formed a great association with Ant Allen, who has now ridden her to a pair of victories and a minor placing from her last three starts. DRAGON SONG had been due to line up at Beaudesert on Easter Saturday, but the abandonment of that meeting proved a blessing in disguise as she returned to her favourite venue and promptly saluted again in Tuesday’s Class 3 Handicap (1350m). The 4YO had sat much closer to the speed for her previous win at Warwick, but she did it the hard way on this occasion with Ant having to take his medicine from the widest gate. The pair made their move rounding the turn, and DRAGON SONG showed huge heart to run down the race favourite and get her head in front in the shadows of the post. Many congratulations to Evan and Joan at Dovedeen, who bred and own the mare.

FRIDAY FUN DAY FOR A DEEL OF HUMOUR

A DEEL OF HUMOUR showed a ton of guts to score first-up at Ballina on Friday.  Given a lovely steer by Anthony Allen, the mare gradually wore down the leader in the Benchmark 74 Handicap to score her fifth career win by the narrowest of margins.  Despite being at her best over further ground, the daughter of Dundeel showed enough dash at the mile to claim her second win from four first-up runs.  Michael was confident the 6YO had returned from her summer spell in great order, and the proof was in the pudding as A DEEL OF HUMOUR carried her earnings to $117,930. “I said to Ant before the race that I thought she had come back better, and it was great to get another win on the board for her owners,” he said.  “They’ve backed me the whole time, so it’s nice to repay the faith they’ve shown. It’s great to get a confidence-boosting win into the mare at the start of her prep, and we can build from here. She had to do it the hard way, but she was very well weighted and that probably made the difference in the end. “She trialled well and we had entered her in a few races before today, but she kept drawing wide. Then when I saw the depth of the field and the weight she would carry, I thought this would be a good option for her and thankfully that’s how it worked out.” Many congratulations to Evan and Joan at Dovedeen.

PLEADEEL GETS HER JUST REWARDS

PLEADEEL’s first metropolitan start was a winning one as she powered home to break her maiden at Doomben.   The mare had been building towards her first win with some improving performances, and she deservedly broke through at start six in the Maiden Plate.   With in-form jockey Micheal Hellyer, who had guided her to third at the Sunshine Coast on New Year’s Eve, back in the saddle, the pair settled comfortably in midfield in the early stages of the 2040m contest.  As the pace began to increase, the pair started picking off their rivals and when they hit the front 200m from home, PLEADEEL showed great strength to score by a length and collect a cheque for $22,000.  “I thought they’d go a lot quicker, it was a fairly moderately run race so it turned into a bit of a sit and sprint, but gee she was tough,” said Hellyer.  “She got bumped around a bit in the straight but it didn’t knock her off her stride. If you go back to her first start, she let down nicely when she got to the outside so we always thought that if she got out to this sort of trip, she’d go well.  “She was ripe for this race, she’s got a good dash so if she can save up that finish for these 2000-metre races, I’m sure she’ll be winning again.” The victory also extended our recent record to two wins and two minor placings from our last seven starters.  Many congratulations to PLEADEEL's owners: Mr T Chudziak, Mr A R Thompson, Mr D P Hansen, Mr T A J de Carteret, Saniuqa 7 Racing, Mr B M Drinkwater, Mr S R Imlach, Mr A S Morrison, Mrs L G Morrison, DNT, 4Kings Racing and Mr S J McMahon.

VIVENZO IS THE CUP KING

VIVENZO qualified for the final of the 2023 Queensland Country Cups Challenge at Doomben in December after scoring his second straight win courtesy of victory in the Innisfail Cup.  Having taken out the Benchmark 60 (1360m) at Gordonvale at his previous start, VIVENZO stepped up to 2000m and promptly broke another track record with his tough win in the Innisfail Cup.  The versatile gelding now has almost $150,000 in career earnings after registering his sixth victory under local rider Jeff Felix. The pair were prominent throughout before taking the lead in the home straight and just holding on in a bunched finish. The 6YO has now secured a start in the $200,000 Country Cups Challenge Final (1600m), which takes place on Saturday, 2 December.  “Our first Far North Queensland Racing Carnival has been a whirlwind experience, and it was great to end it on a high note with victory for Vivenzo,” said Michael.  “Not everything fell our way, but we kept battling and to say this win was special would be an understatement.  “Massive thanks to Mark and Dannielle Atkinson who steered the ship for the stable up there. Their passion for racing and love of our horses was a big reason for Vivenzo’s win. Bring on the Country Cups Challenge Final in December!”    Many congratulations to VIVENZO’s owners: Mr M J Robertson, Mr R R McAnulty, Cheers & Beers, Golf Kings Racing and Mr M A K Morrison.
